Hero and Detail Shots

This hero shot captures the entrance to the building; a building which consists of two studios and a gallery space. This hero image displays the public access to the ground level - a sheltered open floor space for the showroom. The large windows allow people to see the unique staircases of both studios upon entry. These staircases act as sculptural features which creates an experience for the visitors as they enter the site. These exposed sculptural stairs give the visitors an insight into the type of work the artist/designers produce.

This hero shot is important as it highlights the form of the 'above' studio. The above studio to the far right of this image hangs or cantilevers out from the main building. The word 'hanging' was used to describe one of the clients works I had chosen for Experiment 1. I created a deck that extends from their private studio/workshop, where the artist can experience the feeling of 'hanging'- to dangle their feet off the edge of the building. It is here, that works such as the one I chose; one of simplicity and elegance can be thought of in an environment like this one - hanging above a peaceful pond.

This detail shot shows the relationship between the above, the below and the ground level. For the below workshop, visitors can watch the man at work from ground level. As the curved wall surrounds the below workshop, people can walk around from above admiring his works in the making.
Additionally, the staircase for the below space unites with the ground floor and above floor due to its large scale and full-circle form. Furthermore, a curved skylight is positioned above the curved-walled workshop to allow extra light into the below ground space.

The access to the above level is hovered or 'hung' over the below workshop creating an experience of feeling 'light' when walking over the floating staircase. A cantilevering ceiling below the main ceiling height follows from the entrance to the passage way of the above workshop; again capturing the scheme of something hanging.

Animation of 3D model - ARCH1101 - Hanging over curved.

This animation captures the whole building. It zooms in on the 3 spaces of the building: below, above and ground. The video highlights the features of these spaces such as the custom materials, the stair and the relevant client. All elevations and sections of the building are included. Clients work incorporated into SketchUp Model

1. Sketches become a part of the model

Above: material gives this simple cantilevering shape a bold but light presence.

In-Between: this sketch when imported into SketchUp appeared like a variation of the safety tactile design you see at railway stations near drop-offs or on edges of stairs. Thus I put this design close to drop off zones in the model.

Below: Material covers the curved walls of the underground workshop.

The Stairs - sections and 3d models

The Stairs:
Sections

The Stairs:
3D Models

1: Curved

The curved stairs are aligned with the curves of a large-scale steel wheel. Looking at the curve from the front, a large circle is seen, however when viewing it from the side, the stairs are noticeable. The stairs run along the curve on both sides, giving two entry or exit points to the lower ground level. The stair risers are different heights, some almost so high, lunging yourself up is needed. The curve created between the stairs creates a form that encourages people to recline on it and look above. The overarching wheel unifies the upper and lower floors of the space.

2: Hanging

The next set of stairs come from the verb, "hanging." Two large cantilevering beams from the upper floor balances the stair bases with chains. These stairs, which balance and act alike swings, elevate up and down and up again from the ground level to the upper floor. The chains act as the balustrade for pedestrians to balance themselves with if needed. The stair bases are steel and give weight to the set of stairs that hover above the lower ground floor. The stairs elevate to which the pedestrian can view over the highest point of the building, a great lookout opportunity in the space.

3- Relationship between the stairs:

The wheel of the first set of stairs frames the hanging set of stairs when viewing from afar.
